Petane theatre group wins one act play competition

The Petane Players Theatre Group won the New Zealand Theatre Federation’s Hawke’s Bay district One Act Play competition at the Hastings Musical Comedy Company Playhouse Theatre on Saturday.

The Petane play Shadows Shadows was written by Gavin Garner and directed by Janet Robertson. It is set on the veranda of a geriatric hospital ward about to be closed and demolished.

They will compete in the Taupo, Rotorua and Hawke’s Bay regional finals this Saturday in Hastings against the four lake district teams selected.

Six teams nationally will be selected by adjudicator Ewen Coleman for the national final in Wellington on August 23.

Hawke’s Bay adjudicator Hazel Menehira awarded Gisborne Unity Theatre second place for their performance of Barnstable, by James Saunders.

She also commended Napier Boys’ High School for Nothing Happens Twice by S. Ford-Vidette.

Ms Menehira said New Zealand theatre is fortunate to have playwrights producing work for talented actors.
