Renowned potter to visit Hawke’s Bay

A world-renowned potter, Mr Michael Cardew, Cornwall, is to visit Hawke’s Bay in March.

He will arrive in Hawke’s Bay on March 5 and is expected to stay for several days.

While here he will probably be the guest of Mr and Mrs Bruce Martin, Hastings, but as yet this is not definite, said the president of the Napier Art Gallery pottery group, Mr G. Ace.

“Arrangements for his stay in Hawke’s Bay will be made by the Hawke’s Bay Art Gallery in conjunction with Hawke’s Bay potters,” said Mr Ace.

Mr Cardew is visiting New Zealand for the Pan-Pacific Art Festival in Christchurch.

“Michael Cardew has been named as the world’s second greatest potter,” said Mr Ace.

“For several years the New Zealand Society of Potters has been trying to bring him to this country.

“We were really surprised to hear that he was coming to Hawke’s Bay before going on to Christchurch.”
