INTRODUCTION

Its with pleasure that we present to the people of Hawke’s Bay this first issue of “Pictorial News.”

We live in an age in which we take for granted that what we hear about we equally expect to see presented in some visual form.

We are aware of the large variety of events that take place in this progressive and flourishing province. It is the intention of the publishers to represent as widely as possible activities and events that cover the whole spectrum of society.

With this in view we invite all organisations to advise us of their activities – thus month by month we will present a pictorial record of the life and times of our people.

OUR COVER PICTURES   Editor.

The twin cities of Napier and Hastings salute the Spring in this the inaugural issue of ‘Pictorial News’, with attractive girls from our two main towns as cover subjects. On the front is Sharon van Heerden, a computer punch-tape operator, from Hastings. Gracing the back page Napier’s Therese Gannaway with pet lamb, Logan.

MESSAGES FROM MAYORS OF NAPIER AND HASTINGS

Congratulations to Hawke’s Bay Newspapers on the publication of Pictorial News. I am sure that readers will find this magazine an interesting and worthwhile contribution to the coverage of events in our Province.

Pictures are a good medium for conveying activities as they happen and in many cases can serve as lasting memories.

We in Hawke’s Bay are most fortunate in the amount of time that we are able to spend outdoors and of course this leisure time makes a good pictorial record.

I would on behalf of the council and citizens of Napier congratulate the management and staff of Hawke’s Bay Newspapers on their enterprise and forward thinking in producing Pictorial News. I feel sure that the public of Hawke’s Bay have been missing out on a publication of this kind and I trust they will accord the new venture the support that it deserves.

Clyde Jeffery
(Mayor)

I welcome the opportunity to convey my congratulations to the publishers of this new visual photo-magazine a vital news medium which has been lacking in this area for some years now.

Since the old ‘Photo News’ ceased publication, I have always considered that there has been an opening for a pictorial type news magazine about Hawke’s Bay.

It is with pleasure that I learned that such a magazine is to be published each month with the first issue to print in October 1978. I extend my congratulations to the management and staff of Pictorial News for their foresight in commencing a publication devoted to a current pictorial record of the events and happenings of the people of Hawke’s Bay, and I wish them every success in their venture.

I know that this publication will be welcomed by organisations, spiritual, sporting and cultural, involving every facet of our people’s lives and am sure that everyone will support the new Pictorial News magazine.

J. J. O’Connor,
Mayor.

Then . . .

& Now

Napier’s inner harbour at Ahuriri, was once a thrilling scene of activity, as shown in the picture above which was taken close to the turn of the century from a position near the present Ahuriri Tavern. Steam and sail predominate, and one can imagine the feverish activity which took place on the adjacent wharves. Being prior to the earthquake the inner harbour allowed heavier shipping to negotiate the channel. This picture was taken from an early lantern slide. Below: The same side of the jetty from approximately the same spot, as it is today. The Napier Sailing Club is extending anchorage facilities in the immediate foregeground [foreground].

PATIENCE REWARDED
