“The Old Order Changeth, and Giveth Place to the New.”
Such is the fate of all things in this sublimary sphere. Without indulging in too much sentimentality let us deal with the matter in hand – the Hastings public have long wanted a Picture Theatre to while the hours of evening away. The Directory of the Hastings Permanent Picture Company, Ltd., recognised the fact, and in March 1910, it was announced in bold type throughout the papers that a theatre would be immediately erected for the purpose of showing a permanent picture entertainment in the town. With site procured on Karamu Road, practically in the centre of town, the building was rapidly pushed on with, and to-day the promoters have the pleasure of introducing this beautiful theatre to the picture loving public.
A few words in praise to the contractor of the building, Mr. Wilson, a local builder in the town. He certainly has impressed all by the thorough manner in which he completed his duties. The sub-contractors are as follows – Decorating, artistic painting, gilding and glazing, Messers Eaton & Rashleigh, Heretaunga Street, the manner that the ceiling and walls have been tinted will well be remembered by those who have the opportunity of seeing the inside of the theatre. Another striking feature of the theatre being the electric lighting. This great work has been successfully carried out by Mr. R. Fortune, a resident of the town. The fittings, which include arc lights, engine and dynamo, were supplied by Smith & Co., Electricians, Wellington. The plumbing, lavatories, etc., were carried out by Ritchie & Co., Concrete work by Curd & Co., Seating and furnishing by Tombs & Grubb. The entire work has been faithfully done, reflecting credit upon all concerned.
The promoters of this great enterprise feel assured that their efforts will be appreciated by their patrons, and hope that many a pleasant evening such as tonight will be spent in the theatre.
In presenting this Souvenir Programme, the management have great pleasure in thanking all those who have kindly helped to make their opening night so great a success.
