The Story of…

“ROSE MARIE”

The story is set in the Canadian Rockies and lends itself to unusual and colourful stage settings and costuming.

The Heroine, Rose Marie, is the Belle of Saskatchewan; her brother, Emile, is a French-Canadian Trapper, who for his own ends wants his sister to marry a wealthy Fur Trader, Edward Hawley. Rose Marie much prefers Jim Kenyon, the owner of a nearby Gold Claim. Hawley had got himself mixed up with Wanda, the half-caste squaw of Black Eagle, but he finds her an encumbrance now that he has met Rose Marie. Wanda persuades Hawley to come to her Cabin, believing that Black Eagle will be away, but their love-making is interrupted by Jim Kenyon, who comes to see Black Eagle about the Indian’s pretensions to Jim’s Gold Claim.

He departs, and we see the sinister face of Black Eagle in the Cabin Window. He bursts in with the intention of finishing off Hawley, but is himself stabbed in the back by his loving squaw, Wanda, to protect herself, takes advantage of the widely known dispute between Jim Kenyon and Black Eagle, regarding the Gold Claim, and fastens the guilt upon Kenyon, who has to fly when the Mounted Police come on the scene. Rose Marie is convinced that Kenyon has been Wanda’s lover and in despair she consents to marry Edward Hawley, and the Wedding preparations are in full swing when Wanda returns full of rage that the man for whom she committed murder has thrown her over for Rose Marie. In a passionate scene she denounces herself and Hawley, and the Wedding is off.

The comedy plot deals with the Hotel Proprietress, Lady Jane, Sergeant Malone of the “Mounties,” and Hard-Boiled Herman. The play abounds with many comedy situations, many beautiful and haunting melodies and some spectacular dancing, and, of course, the famous Totem Pole.

Our Producer…

JACK BAXTER.

Jack Baxter, who is the Producer of The Hastings Musical Comedy Company’s 1956 production, “Rose Marie,” is well known to theatre-goers in Hawke’s Bay as a versatile artist and a meticulous and capable producer.

When Amateur Operatic Societies were at the height of their prominence in the cultural life of the Dominion, Jack Baxter, with his partner Owen Cardston, was eagerly sought after by societies for the production of light operas and musical comedies. The first presentation by amateurs in New Zealand of “The Belle of New York” was produced for the Stratford Operatic Society by them, and it was mainly through their enterprise that the Stratford Society secured the amateur performing rights in New Zealand for that piece, which, we understand, it still holds. Other favourites included “The Country Girl,” “Dianne Develops,” “High Jinks,” “Dorothy,” and “The Arcadians.”

Jack Baxter was a member of Annette Kellerman’s company when she made the film “Venus of the South Seas” at Nelson in 1921, and he then spent some years on the professional stage, touring with J.C. Williamson’s. During that period he enjoyed considerable success and was associated with many well-known artists.

We are very glad to have him with us again this year, and express our deep appreciation of his efforts, which have contributed so greatly to this evening’s performance of “Rose Marie.”

Henry Rudolph
is renowned throughout New Zealand for his work in the musical world. An accomplished and versatile musician, he plays many instruments including the piano, violin, saxophone and clarinet, and has been musical director for numerous musical comedies, the most popular being “Firefly,” “Showboat,” “Merry Widow,” “Desert Song” and “New Moon.”

During the war he was musical director for all the 2YA Concert Parties, and in 1947 he took a Concert Party to Japan. In 1954 he toured Korea with his “Harmony Serenaders” and enjoyed notable success.

His “Capital Quartet” is one of the most talented and popular vocal groups in the country, and in July of this year the B.B.C. broadcast over its Light Programme a group of Maori songs by the Quartette, with Pauline Ashby as guest artist. This was the first occasion on which New Zealand artists had been used on that programme – a tribute to the quality of the performance and a signal honour for Henry Rudolph.

We are glad to have him with us, and extend to him a warm welcome to Hawke’s Bay.

Our Chorus Mistress…

Mary Bell is one of the best known and most accomplished musicians in Hawke’s Bay, having been associated with choral, operatic and orchestral societies, competition festivals, ballet and drama for many years. She is widely recognised as one of the leading vocal coaches in the province, and as an accompaniste, too, she is greatly sought after.

The Company has been fortunate indeed in having her services since it first ventured into musical comedy in 1954. The standard of the chorus work in “Sally” and “No, No, Nanette” has been the subject of many favourable comments, and this high standard has been solely due to the flair Mary Bell has for obtaining the co-operation of the whole chorus and extracting from each member the very best of which he or she is capable.

In “Rose Marie,” we think you will agree, she has excelled herself, and in doing so has endeared herself to us all.

MARY BELL.

Emma Maye

Ballet Mistress for “Rose Marie” studied National dancing under Hazel and Jean Lee, of Napier, and Ballet under Jean Ballantyne, Hastings, and is a Member of the Royal Academy of Dancing. For many years she has taught Ballet and National dancing in Wairoa, Napier and Hastings. Since residing permanently in Hastings, her work has been confined to National dancing, and she has trained many outstanding dancers in this field. For the last five years she has been a member of the Technical Committee of the New Zealand Academy of National Dancing, and three times has examined throughout New Zealand.

THE “PRETTY THINGS” BALLET.

President’s Remarks…

Hastings has been and still is noted for the wealth of musical talent which it possesses. We feel that there is no better avenue through which such talent may be discovered, encouraged and cultivated, than through The Hastings Musical Comedy Company.
Anyone imbued with this spirit or interested in the fulfilling of these objects should join the Society, so that it may become progressively stronger and more successful each succeeding year.

Nothing quite takes the place of Musical Comedy as light entertainment for those at all musically inclined, and no other form of production gives such a vast amount of pleasure to such a large number of people.

In these days of high costs it would be impossible for a professional company to present a musical such as Rose Marie,” and to the amateur society falls the task of providing this form of entertainment.

The success of such a venture is possible only by the loyalty and co-operation of our members and the goodwill of the community.

In this our year of City celebration, we feel that we have deserved well of the people in the past and can be assured of our place in the City of the future.

W. WILSON,
President.
