Programme 1959 – “Boys On!” Revue

“BOYS ON!” REVUE

BACKSTAGE WITH THE BOYS . . .

Much of the excitement and hysteria in connection with the production of a big musical comes prior to the rehearsals and preview performance. The fittings, the sewing or sequins, the Sunday rehearsals with settings, props and orchestra all go to make the atmosphere electric.

Some might ask why have the boys do a Revue? But where else could one find a medium suitable to cope with one hundred and forty growing, energetic youngsters between the ages of nine and thirteen. Far from detracting from the boys’ school work, there are many opportunities in the curriculum of to-day for the discipline, singing, dancing, handcraft and art which have formed the basis of this presentation. As the show is on a large scale every number has had to be covered and understudies provided for all leading parts.

A special word must go to the legion of boys who have doubled on all these rehearsals to assure a smooth-running performance.

The secret of the continuing gaiety and freshness demanded in a non-stop musical revue chiefly on the orchestra, and to them our sincere thanks, for it is they who maintain the tempo and mood of the songs and dances.

“Boys On!” Revue is quite a project as musicals go. The cast of 147 each make at least four changes – altogether two thousand eight pieces of costume are worn.

The show is equipped with fourteen full stage production numbers and features eighty-two pieces of manuscript. A stage crew of eleven and a team of twenty-seven dressers and make up assistants complete the mechanics, The Marist Brothers are grateful to this army of helpers, plus the front-of-house staff and programme sellers and to all who assisted so willingly in the production, and presentation of “Boys On!’ Revue.
