Our Chorus Mistress . . .

Mrs. MARY BELL has been responsible for the very fine chorus work of many successful past productions of the Hastings Musical Comedy Company, and again we owe her a debt of gratitude for the hours of hard work she has put into “Carousel.”

The high standard reached by the Chorus must surely rate this production as one of her finest achievements.

The Story of “Carousel”

“CAROUSEL,” several times a Broadway success, is a musical play based on Ferenc Molnar’s “Liliom.” It unfolds a strange and beautiful love story told in truly unforgettable songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein, who have also given us the immortal musicals “South Pacific,” “The King and I” and “Oklahoma.”

Set in a typical New England town between the years 1873-1888, it tells the story of Billy Bigelow, the handsome and proud barker for the carousel in the local amusement park, and Julie Jordan, the shy and sweet little girl who works in the local cotton mill. They fall in love and go off together – Julie against the warnings of the townsfolk and Billy against the advice of the owner of the carousel, Mrs. Mullin, a woman violently and jealously in love with him. When they return, married, they face a hostile town, and in the difficult months that follow Billy is unable to find work, becomes bitter and bullies his wife – until he learns that he is to become a father. Desperate and wanting to provide for his expected child, he agrees to join his unsavoury pal, Jigger Craigin, in a robbery. The robbery goes awry and Billy stabs himself with his own knife to avoid capture.

Fifteen years later Billy, looking down from heaven, sees his attractive but rejected and unhappy young daughter, Louise. Still determined to help his child, he obtains permission to return to earth for one day and brings with him a star which he gives to her. This star, together with Billy’s fatherly advice, brings the girl new joy and assurance, and Julie, seeing this, knows that in spite of everything, she did not make a mistake in marrying the man of her choice. Billy, satisfied that he has at last done something good for his child, returns to heaven.

OUR PRODUCER…

LAURIE SWINDELL has already shown her capabilities as a producer of musical comedy with her recent successes, “The Student Prince” and “South Pacific,” for the Hastings Musical Comedy Company.

Now, in 1962, she adds to her thirty years’ association with the amateur theatre the North Island stage premiere production of “Carousel.”

We are indeed grateful to her for once again undertaking this task, and sincerely hope that her association with us will continue in the years to come.

RUTH POSNER

The Company has indeed been fortunate in securing the services of Ruth Posner as Choreographer and Ballet Mistress for this the 1962 production, “Carousel.” She is a graduate of the London College of Dance and Drama and also a lecturer of Modern Dance for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance. Her extensive career includes not only teaching but also dancing in British musicals in the West End of London and on television.

Ruth Posner, since coming to Hawke’s Bay, has danced the leading role in “Vagabond King” and was choreographer for “White Horse Inn,” both having been produced by the Napier Operatic Society.

The Company and community as a whole have, without doubt, suffered a great loss in her having now left New Zealand to take up residence in Rotterdam.
