Programme 1965 – The Season That Was Yesterday

REPERTORY presents

THE SEASON
THAT WAS YESTERDAY

by TERRY COYLE

LOOKING AT OURSELVES

. . . Playing games is a natural part of the process of growing up, an aid to physical and emotional maturity; continuing to play them in moderation when we have grown up is good for us in many ways.

The contention that rugby develops such qualities as courage, sense of fair play, manliness, self control, co-operativeness in greater measure than any other game is, I am sure, pure nonsense . . .

I question very much whether the sort of courage that rugby, or for that matter any other game, may be held to develop is the sort that will make [a man] better able to endure pain, loss and disappointment, misunderstanding, calumny and ostracism . . .

The single minded pursuit of a transitory physical glory often prevents the full use of the intellectual and other talents [a man is] endowed with.

This is a serious matter because a successful professional career is much more valuable to both the individual who follows it and the society he serves than the ephemeral winning of a provincial or national jersey, followed by a less useful working life, quite often slowed down by mental and physical fat.
