The 12ft wide Broadloom carpeting with its 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent nylon is a wonderful hard wearing carpet.
How many housewives darn mens socks today?
It’s the same combination of wool and nylon.
Remember, 27 inch wide carpet is out. it’s “old hat” at its best, the narrow strips are noticeable, not so with Broadloom.
12ft Broadloom is today’s carpet, and Kershaws Ltd is your market.

Producer

Hazel Stroud is a household name in many South Island towns, where she has produced and directed for ballet, musical comedy and repertory. We feel proud that she has brought her creative talents to Hastings to produce “Call Me MADAM” and we thank her for her untiring efforts to make this wonderful show a success.

Doreen Mudgway as Mrs. Sally Adams.

A member of the Company since its formation, Doreen Mudgway has played leading roles in many of the Company’s productions, including “Sally”, “Rose Marie”, “Carousel”, and “Zip Goes a Million.” “Madam” is her most challenging role yet.

Earl Berentsen as Cosmo Constantine.

Making his second appearance with the Company, Earl Berentsen played ‘Steve’ in Showboat last year. Earl has played leading roles for the Group Theatre and the Patea Players and has also represented Taranaki and Wanganui at rugby football.

The Story of “Call Me MADAM”

“Call Me MADAM” is one of the most popular post-war stage musical comedies and has rung up long runs of success in both New York and London, and, in fact wherever “Madam” has hung out her sign she has been a top hit. In London the production ran for fourteen months in the city’s largest theatre, the Coliseum, before going on tour in England, America and Australia.

The story of “Call Me MADAM” centres on the appointment of an American hostess as American Ambassador to a small European State, Lichtenburg. Full of Yankee self-confidence, and only the scantiest knowledge of the mysteries of protocol, Mrs. Sally Adams immediately causes consternation with her good looks, extremely fashionable clothes and, above all, her falling in love with the handsome Prime Minister who complicates her plans when he curtly refuses a huge dollar loan she – for sentimental reasons – was negotiating for the State. Feelings run high with emotion, and politics take a ribbing from this well-knit comedy that captures the imagination from the curtain up to the last lilting bar of music.

Music and lyrics are by Irving Berlin and dotted through the story are the incomparable Berlin songs: “Washington Square Dance”, “The Hostess with the Mostes, on the Ball”, “Can You Use Any Money Today? “You’re Just in Love”, “Something to Dance About”, “Marrying for Love”, “It’s a Lovely Day Today”, and “They Like Ike.”

Spectacle is further heightened in this acclaimed musical comedy by the addition of many beautiful and unusual ballets, ranging from traditional Folk Dances to most intricate modern dance routines. Glamour is present with a capital “G” and model gowns and sparkling jewellery flow as Mrs. Sally Adams sweeps gloriously through this satirical musical.

“Call Me MADAM” is a real story about real people in a series of real situations. The appointment of a wealthy society hostess as Ambassador would be quite possible with the diplomatic set-up in Washington, and Sally Adams’ cosy telephone conversations with Harry (Truman) give an added air of authenticity.

Cedric White

The Company was extremely fortunate to obtain the services of Cedric White as Musical Director for “Call Me MADAM”. He took over this vital position at short notice, following the untimely death of Mr. Robert Mulholland.

Mr. White learned music in Hastings from the late Archie Don, author of the Maori Opera “Marama”.

He was conductor of the Hastings Orchestral Society and a member of the original “Kiwi” Concert Party. After the war he studied at the London Royal Academy and the Paris National Conservatorie, returning to New Zealand he toured with the J. C. Williamson organisation before settling in Napier, since when he has been Musical Director for of the Napier Operatic Society’s productions.

Some Comments from our President . . .

With this presentation of “Call Me MADAM” the Hastings Musical Comedy Company maintains its policy of giving the theatre-going public of Hawke’s Bay the best in revivals of popular musicals, presented on a scale that would not be attempted outside the main centres by commercial managements.

Our Society gives relaxation and enjoyment to many and provides an outlet for the artistic talent in the community; may we hope that the results of the skill, ability and hard work of so many enthusiastic members – those you see tonight and the great number whom you do not, people who have worked for weeks in the preparation of this production, are justified.

The sudden and tragic passing of Robert Mulholland, our Musical Director, was a shock to our Society and the wide circle of people who knew him. We would like to express our appreciation to Cedric White of Napier, who came forward to take his place.

May we extend a welcome also to the delegates who come from Invercargill to Auckland for the half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Federation of Operatic Societies; we are honoured that they have chosen Hastings as the venue for their deliberations.

Live theatre needs your support. Government subsidies and Arts Council grants are not for us – the Society relies on the goodwill of the public in Hawke’s Bay – may I commend our organisation and its activities to all with the theatre at heart.

C. J. WRIGHT.
