• It’s the same combination of wool and nylon.
• Remember. 27 inch wide carpet is out, it’s old hat”, at its best, the narrow strips are noticeable, not so with Broadloom.

Laurie Swindell
Making a very welcome return to the company after a three year break, is Napier radio-personality Laurie Swindell. Her previous productions for the company were “Student Prince”, “Carousel”, “Zip Goes a Million” and the record breaking “South Pacific.”
Cedric White
This is Cedric White’s second year as Musical Director for the company. We are very fortunate in being able to call on his extensive musical experience in this vital position.
The Story of “Can-Can”
“Can-Can” is a spectacular show featuring the famed Parisian Can-Can dance, and Cole Porter has actually borrowed a page from history in his references to the dancing laundresses and the theme of the dances being banned by even the worldly French authorities. All this really happened though not in the streamlined song embellished Cole Porter manner !
Highlights of the show are the beautiful Porter melodies, including “I Love Paris,” “Cest Magnifique,” “Mon’ Matre,” “Maidens Typical of France,” “The Wrong Face,” and so on. Then there are the brilliantly executed dance numbers, ranging from the frenzied Can-Can itself to the Apache routine and the elaborate and decorative choreography of the Garden of Eden ballet.
Fundamentally, “Can-Can” is a love story, with the night-spot owner (La Mome Pistache) falling in love, against her better judgement, with handsome Judge Forestier, who is pledged to apply the law, even if it means running La Mome out of business, that is, until he, too, falls in love . . .
But “Can-Can” provides a wide variety of entertainment moods, with the comedy scenes playing a vitally important part. Headed by Boris (a Bulgarian sculptor who can’t sell his statues, but lives from the earnings of dancer Claudine), the four artists are amongst the most laugh-making characters ever created on stage.
Corinne Bridge
(La Mome Pistache)
Was born in Wellington and at 17 she won the first of many scholarships, gold medals and prizes that were to come her way. These led to engagements all over New Zealand and eventually to five years in England studying at the Guildhall School of Music and the London Opera School with the aid of a Government Bursary. She sang in opera, oratorio and radio shows in London as well as the West End run of “The Sound of Music”. Since returning to New Zealand, she has been heard throughout the country in roles with the N.Z. Opera Company and as guest artist with the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra.

Some Comments from our President . . .
The Hastings Musical Comedy Company has built up the reputation over the past sixteen years of bringing to the theatre-going public of Hawke’s Bay worthwhile and enjoyable entertainment and its choice in 1967 leaves no doubt of this. Negotiations with Tams-Witmark in New York secured for us the Amateur Premiere rights to Cole Porter’s “Can-Can” but realising the costs of presenting such a spectacular production would be very high, we entered into a joint venture with the Christchurch Operatic Society. In so doing we have brought it within the scope of many Societies who otherwise could not afford to stage it.
Miss Corinne Bridge of the New Zealand Opera Company appears in the role of Pistache and her wide experience both here and abroad has been a great inspiration to us all.
We are deeply indebted to those key personnel who each year return to give of their best to make our productions the success they are. Their loyalty is something we are very proud of.
Live Theatre has been facing very real competition over the last few years but we are confident that, providing the standard of our productions does not alter the public of Hawke’s Bay will continue to support us.
DERECK R. WHITWORTH.
