Laurie Swindell
Producer
Well known radio personality, Laurie Swindell is back with us again this year. After 30 years as an Actress/Producer in Legitimate Theatre, she branched out into the Musical Comedy field seven years ago. Tricia Vossen
(Babe Williams)
Tricia joined the Company in 1961 and has played roles in many shows including “Zip Goes a Million”, “Carousel” and “Can-Can”. She received her early vocal training from the convent and later from several teachers. She is now resident vocalist at Ormlie Lodge and with her versatile background Tricia is ideally suited for the demanding role of Babe.
Gordon Collins
(Sid Sorokin)
Gordon will be remembered for his performance of Gaylord Rovenal in our recent production of “Show Boat”. Over the years he has appeared in many productions for the Waipawa Musical and Dramatic Society. He is now making a welcome return to the company to perform the exacting role of Sid Sorokin the male lead.
The Story of the Show
“The Pajama Game” which opened in New York in May 1954, was still playing to capacity audiences in the 80th week of its run when the eagerly awaited British production was launched In October, 1955.
Billed as a New Musical Comedy, “The Pajama Game” certainly answers fully to its description. Its lively pace, delightful choreography and complete unity of dialogue, score and lyrics give it freshness and vitality.
The action is set mainly in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory where Sid Sorokin, the new superintendent, intends to keep production at its peak. He encounters Babe Williams, Chief of the Trade Union’s Grievance Committee, and although they are in opposite camps a romance is born.
Hines, the popular efficiency expert has fallen in love with Gladys, the President’s Secretary, but has to combat his powerful feelings of jealousy.
The Union’s demand of 7½ cents an hour increase results in conflict between Sid and Babe and their relationship is abruptly halted.
Gladys who holds the key to the problem, is invited to a night-spot, Hernando’s Hideaway, by Sid who, now convinced that the Union claim is fully justified, plans to gain access to the well guarded ledger, that will prove their case.
Musical numbers include the haunting and tuneful Hey There, the gay and carefree Once A Year Day, Small Talk, the virile and entertaining Steam Heat, the title tune “The Pajama Game” and the popular Hernando’s Hideaway.

Ken Aitken-Jones
Musical Director
The Society has pleasure in introducing to the theatre patrons of Hawke’s Bay our new Musical Director, Ken Aitken-Jones, who may be a newcomer to our ranks, but undoubtedly no newcomer to the formidable task of Musical Director. For the show, Mr Aitken-Jones has used a new orchestration, recently written for predominantly brass band. He has recently arrived from England where he had wide experience in both brass band and orchestral work. As a trumpeter and cornetist, he played with the Northern Philharmonic at Leeds, the Lincoln Symphony, the Cresswell Colliery Band, Brighouse, Rastrick, and the Black Duke Bands of which he later became conductor. He also toured Britain in the R.A.F. Military band accompanying a Ralph Reeder Show.
Mary Bell
Chorus Mistress
This being Mary Bell’s 14th season with our Society, she has proved again her capabilities in extracting the very best singing from her chorus and principals.

Judith Cater
(Gladys)
Judy needs no introduction to Hawke’s Bay audiences after her outstanding performance in “Can-Can” last year. She repeated her performance for the Christchurch Operatic Society in May of this year. As an experienced and talented comedienne and dancer she is well suited for the role of Gladys in this production.
Keith Brazier
(Hines)
We welcome back to the stage one of the Company’s most accomplished comedians. Keith has performed in many past productions the most memorable being “Rio Rita” and “Zip Goes a Million”. The role of Hines, the popular efficiency expert, is an excellent medium for the expressions of his talents.
Ann Gillett and Angela Horrocks
(Ballet Mistresses)
Both Angela and Ann are associate teachers for Jean Ballantyne and have their major examinations to their credit. Both have appeared in several of the Ballets in previous productions, Angela having danced the solo ballet role in “Call Me Madam” and also having assisted Jean Ballantyne as Ballet Mistress. Ann has toured with the N.Z. Opera Company appearing in the ballet of “Die Fledemaus”[“Die Fledermaus”], and has also danced the exacting role as the serpent in the Garden of Eden Ballet in “Can-Can”. We feel that they have ably handled the ballets in this our 1968 production.
