“Our Thanks”

It would be impossible for us to list all those wonderful organisations business firms and individual people who have assisted us directly or indirectly in the production of “Kiss Me Kate”.

Without their help, willingness and tolerance, our task would have been all that much greater and we, the cast and management, extend our sincere and deep appreciation to them all.

Thank you once again,

KISS ME KATE” – THE STORY

A present-day theatrical troupe is presenting Shakepeare’s [Shakespeare’s] The Taming of the Shrew in Baltimore, Maryland. The cast includes Fred Graham and his former wife, Lilli; also Bill Calhoun, an irresponsible gambler, and the girl in whom he is interested, Lois Lane. Bill breaks down and confesses to Lois that he is involved with gangsters, who have his I.O.U. for $10,000 from a crap game. Meanwhile Fred and his ex-wife – though divorced – begin to realise that their one-time tender feelings for each other have not completely died out and they start to reminisce about the shows in which they had appeared. Just before the opening night of The Taming of the Shrew, Fred sends his star, Lois, flowers. By mistake they come to Lilli’s dressing-room – further proof to her that Fred still loves her.

On stage, the performance of the Taming of the Shrew is taking place. As a play within a play, we learn that Bianco cannot get married until her older sister, Katharine, has found a husband. When Petruchio arrives in Padua to seek out a rich wife he is chosen for Katharine. The latter, a shrew, makes no attempt to conceal her feelings about men, while Petruchio knows that Katharine is not the woman of his dreams, nevertheless, he agrees to marry her.

We are now transferred from Shakepeare’s Padua back to the intrigues within the theatrical company. Having learned that Fred’s flowers were meant for Lois, Lilli bursts into a fit of temper, and announces hotly that she is leaving the company for good. Her departure, however, is delayed by the arrival of gangsters who have come to collect from Bill the $10,000 for his I.O.U.

Back stage, when Bill reprimands Lois for flirting with one of the actors, she makes light of her tendency to be fickle but, for all his troubles with Lois, Bill has good cause for cheer. There has been a violent shake-up in the gangster world, as a result of which Bill’s I.O.U. is no longer valid. Bill and Lois are now reconciled, and Katharine and Fred return to each other.

Producer:   SADIE BROWN

“Each show is an individual challenge and I trust that I have done justice to the script and to you, the audience, for these have been my personal goals in this production.”

Sadie Brown needs no introduction to Hawke’s Boy audiences, being well remembered for the principal roles she has played in productions by other theatrical societies and more recently displaying her talents as a producer. For the long hours of work and her untiring efforts with this year’s production we express our grateful thanks.

Musical Director:   CECIL FITZWATER

Napier born Cecil Fitzwater gained his letters in music while In his early twenties. He had mastered the violin, could play the piano, and was a solo cornetist in brass bands. He has been choirmaster and band conductor in Wellington, Auckland, and Hawke’s Bay. All the cast recognise his outstanding talent and we express our sincere appreciation for his contribution to this and past productions.

Choreographer:   JENNIFER GRANT

Choreography is an art of the theatre all too often underestimated. We have pleasure in introducing Jennifer Grant to Hawke’s Bay audiences. This young and talented young lady, holder of an intermediate teachers certifificate [certificate] for the British Ballet Organisation, London and with 12 years of teaching behind her, has provided a new and exciting approach to a variety of modern and Elizabethan movements.
