PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD

It has always been the aim of the Society to provide entertainment of a high standard and we feel that we have again achieved our object in the presentation of our “21st production” celebration – Sandy Wilson’s “Boyfriend”.

Though this has been a period of intense rehearsal, our cast has rallied with whole hearted efforts under the inspiring directorship of Miss Robyn Charlton-Kelly whose talent and enthusiasm has injected all concerned with a true sense of dedication.

Our thanks are extended to all members for their support, pianist, orchestra, stage and house management, whose concentrated efforts have enabled our producer and musical director to mould the entirely local cast into what we hope will prove one of our most successful productions.

I would take this opportunity of expressing our thanks to the Press and those firms who have supported us in any way.

THE BOYFRIEND . . . THE STORY

The story is simple with little intrigue – a reflection of the times. The pupils of a girls finishing school in the South of France, are in a state of excitement over the Carnival Ball. One of the girls, Polly Browne, is very rich, and in order to protect herself against fortune hunters, has invented an escort. Another of the girls, Maisie, has a very eager boy friend named Bobby van Husen, to whom she pretends indifference.

Since coincidence is the mainspring of most musical books of the 1920’s it follows in this story that Polly’s Father Percival, while visiting the school, finds himself face to face with an old flame Madame Dubonnet, the school’s head-mistress, and Madame’s delight is Percy’s embarrassment.

Next to appear is Tony (through the French windows of course) bringing Polly’s dress for the Carnival Ball. It is love at first sight and they arrange a rendezvous Sur le Plage, little knowing that the disguises they both adopt to attract one another, will bring tears before the traditional reunion at the close of the story.
