PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to our show.
The Waipawa Musical and Dramatic Club has built up a reputation over the years to bring you worthwhile and enjoyable entertainment, and I hope you will approve of our choice for 1970.
Although this has been a period of intense rehearsal, our cast has rallied wholeheartedly under the inspiring lead given by this year’s Producer, Mrs Joan Collins. Her enthusiasm and talent have injected all concerned with a true sense of dedication.
Our thanks go to all who made this production possible. Their concentrated efforts enabled our Producer and Musical Director to weld the cast into what I hope, will be one of our most successful shows.
Finally, I take this opportunity to thank you, our audience, for your support and hope that you will have a most enjoyable evening.
JOHN HOKKE,
President.

PRODUCER
Joan Collins
Making a very welcome return to the Club after a ten year break, this is her first attempt at producing a show solely by herself. Joan co-produced ‘Sugar and Spice’ and has also acted in many of the Club’s previous shows, including ‘Tickled Pink’, ‘Nylons and Nonsense’ and ‘Going Up’.
Joan is the daughter of Mrs Queenie Hamilton, who has produced some excellent revues for the Club in earlier years. The committee and cast wish to thank Joan for her untiring devotion to ‘Bitter Sweet’.
The Story of “Bitter Sweet”
‘BITTER SWEET” begins in 1925, in the home of Lady Sarah Shane, who is entertaining guests at a pre-wedding party for two young people, Dolly Chamberlain, a gay young lass, and Lord Henry Jekyll, a wealthy Aristocrat.
During the evening, Lady Shane unfolds to her guests the story of her life, and in Scene 2 we go back to 1875, where we see her in her home in Belgrave Square as a young girl, Sarah Millick, who is in love with her Music Teacher, Carl Linden. At this stage Sarah is engaged to marry the Hon. Hugh Devon; she and Carl, realising that they can’t live apart, elope to Vienna.
Five years later, in Act 2 we see Carl as Orchestral Leader in Herr Schlick’s Cafe and Sarah as dancer. Sarah hates her work (as often she attracts the unwanted attention of Officers from the neighbouring Army Barracks, and is forced to dance with them), and one, Captain August Lutte forces his attentions upon her, resulting in a duel in the Cafe between Carl and himself, in which Carl is killed, leaving Sarah alone and heartbroken.
In Act 3, fifteen years have passed, bringing us to 1890. Sarah has become famous over these years singing Carl’s music all over Europe. She returns to London at the invitation of the Marquis of Shane, who has fallen in love with her and has proposed many times. She also renews her aquaintance [acquaintance] with old friends of fifteen years ago.
The Marquis proposes once again, and eventually she accepts, although telling him that she has only ever loved one man, Carl.

Beth Wood plays Sarah Millick
Beth, who now lives in Waipukurau, plays the demanding role of ‘Sarah Millick’. Beth received her early training in voice production from the late John Emmett, and more recently, has sung with the Orpheus Choir and The N.Z. Opera Company.
Malcolm Holt as Carl Linden
Making his first appearance with the Company as ‘Carl Linden’, Malcolm Holt has recently moved from Auckland, where he took part in many amateur plays.

Pat Coddington as Manon
Pat plays the part of ‘Manon’, the main singer and dancer in Herr Schlicks’ Cafe.
Having taken part in many amateur dramatic productions in Waipukurau, Pat, who lives in Wanstead, is well qualified for this exacting role.
Pianist: Geraldine Power
Geraldine Power’s musical contribution as accompanist is again appreciated by the club, and cast alike. The club is fortunate to have the assistance and support of a pianist of such high calibre. The music from this production is a challenge to any musician, and Geraldine has overcome these difficult moments to give a polished performance.
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Barbara Towers
Once again, Barbara Towers is handling the musical side of this year’s production. Barbara is a teacher at the Waipawa Primary School, and has been associated with many previous productions of the club, including in 1967, “Wedding in Paris”, and in 1968, “Paint your Wagon”.
