Programme 1972 – Music Festival ’72

MUSIC FESTIVAL ’72

HERETAUNGA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

‘SAVE THE CHILDREN’

MUNICIPAL THEATRE HASTINGS
12th and 13th September, 1972

LADIES & GENTLEMEN,

BOYS & GIRLS,

A very warm welcome to you all. It is our hope that you will enjoy thoroughly our Music Festival ’72.

This year’s production is one with a difference – for we are proud and pleased to be associated with ‘Save The Children’ Organisation. It seems most appropriate that needy children somewhere will benefit from the efforts of other children in another part of the world.

We are fortunate indeed to have as our Musical Director, Mrs. Ngaire Shand, whose talent and skill have been available to the school for many years – this is her seventh production.

A special ‘Thank you’ also to our supporting artists, the Directors of the Maori number, the ‘back-stage’ staff and the hundreds of children who have practised so hard to ensure the success of the evening.

P.J. McCARTHY
HEADMASTER

‘Save The Children’ are delighted to be associated with this School Music Festival ’72. Heretaunga Intermediate School staff and pupils have supported the work of ‘Save The Children’ most generously over a long period.

As Ngaire Shand’s musical talents are widely known, we can expect to enjoy a variety of musical talent and hope to forward a useful donation to help children in extreme need. Children so willingly helping children whom they recognise as lacking many of the things they take for granted is very encouraging.

PROGRAMME NOTES

* Refers to songs where the audience participates!?

It is hoped that you will take a full part in these sections to give the children a helping hand and, who knows, you may enjoy it!

Down The River   – Your particular part will be explained fully.

Land of Hope and Glory   – join in last chorus only please.

Noye’s Fludde   – This Opera is based on the old Chester Miracle play and was set to music by Benjamin Britten still retaining the old English spelling. Britten wrote this for children of Intermediate age along with professional singers. We are picking up the story in the Finale of the Opera where the ‘Voice of God’ tells Noah that he may now leave the Ark taking all the animals and his family with him. The animals sing Alleluia. God’s voice is heard again promising that he will send no more floods and as a token of his promise he will send a rainbow.

The animals, joined by Noye’s family, then sing in praise.

Characters:   Noye   – Anthony Bewley
Mrs. Noye   – Jill Tobin
Noye’s three sons and wives   – Special Choir children
Voice of God   – Anthony Bewley

Night Song   – This is from ‘The Little Sweep’, another Opera by Benjamin Britten. It is based on the Charles Kingsley novel ‘The Water Babies’. The ‘Night Song’ is sung by the children in the story and is written to imitate the bird calls heard at night.

The Fox   – A catchy Al Hirt number which inspired Mrs. June Keough to such a extent that she felt it must have words so that the children could sing to it. Not only is it a popular number with the children but the words and sounds are so good for diction and breath work.   Thank you June.

Jesus Christ Superstar   – These excerpts are written in the modern American idiom, (a) ‘Hosanna Heysanna’ is a hymn of praise and reference to Jesus Christ as J.C. is looked upon as a form of high respect and honour, Only the very famous and well known ‘superstars’ like L.B.J. and J.F.K, receive this term of endearment.

(b) Everything’s Alright
The words of this song are taken from John, chap. 12, verses 1-8.
Six days before the ‘Passover’ a supper is given in the honour of Jesus. Mary Magdalene annoints the feet of Jesus and wipes them with her hair. Judas objects to this and says that money spent on fine ointments should be given to the poor, although, as a thief he knows that this money would be pooled in a common purse in his charge. Jesus asks for Mary to be left alone and says that she may keep her ointments until the day of his burial. “You have the poor among you always,” he said, “but you will not always have me”.
