The societies combining to bring ‘OLIVER!’ to the Hastings and Napier audiences have been meeting regularly over the past two year period prior to staging. Each society realised that the mounting costs of bringing new shows before the public, the problems of casting, stage crews, lighting, preformance [performance] periods and other factors must be considered before any sort of union could be achieved. Both societies have a jealously guarded reputation and in spite of parochial pundits who stated, it could never work, here at last is OLIVER! A twin city production of 22 preformances [performances] brought about by the determination of elected members to the joint committee. With a little give and take from both societies, here we have an example of co-operation within the operatic movement which other groups within and outside could well take note of.
Who knows? – If OLIVER! is the success we hope it will be we may one day have one Hawke’s Bay Operatic Society which could be without par elsewhere in New Zealand.

musical director

CECIL FITZWATER

Ces has been associated with both societies as musical director for many years. His love for music however extends over a wider field and he is well known throughout New Zealand particularly in choral and band work. For ‘OLIVER!’ his rehearsal of orchestra, principals and chorus and his conductorship ensure Lionel Barts music loses nothing under the control of his baton. While coaxing the best of them all, his sense of fun is a delight to everone [everyone] who works with him. His dedication to his music assures theatre goers ‘OLIVER!’ will musically be remembered long after the season has finished.

producer

JAMES MORGAN

James is resident producer and runs a theatre workshop for the Napier operatic society. He has also produced for the Hastings light opera company. Although invited to produce elsewhere in New Zealand, he had remained loyal to Hawke’s Bay. A perfectionist in so far as the show is concerned, the greatest demands James makes are on his own ability. His creative production, his insight into action and his wonderful knowledge of theatre, enable him to pass on to the cast the ingredients required for a successful production. Training a cast of 44 including 16 of Fagans little thieves is no mean feat. We hope audiences will find ‘OLIVER!’ a unique and delightful experience in the history of theatre in Hawke’s Bay, if so, the credit will be in no small measure the product of our talented and gifted producer to whom both societies say thank you James Morgan.

pianist

CHRISTINE JULIER

Rehearsal pianist is the person both the producer and musical director must depend upon for the smooth running of rehearsals. Her high standard of musical ability and her interest in ‘OLIVER!’ carry over into the orchestra as pianist For the many long hours she has so willingly given, both societies acknowledge their thanks.

Also to MISS LORNA DULEY who has proved an able assistant to Christine, we also acknowledge her rehearsal work with thanks.
