The Sound of Music

Maria Rainer is a postulant at the Nonnberg Abbey in Austria. Although she makes a sincere effort to conform to the code of behaviour expected of a postulant, her joyful exuberance and her love of nature and music, always seem to land her in trouble. The understanding Mother Abbess realises that Maria is not yet ready for the diciplines [disciplines] of religious life and so she sends her to act as temporary Governess to the children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a retired officer of the Austrian Navy.

When Maria arrives at the Villa she is shocked to find that the children have been brought up in an atmosphere of strict Naval discipline and have become little more than automatons. Since the death of their mother they have not experienced the joys of childhood. Maria, determines to remedy this by imparting to them some of the love of music and nature that she holds so dear. Captain von Trapp objects strongly to the alterations to the children’s way of life and so all her plans have to be carried out without his knowledge.

Maria teaches the children to sing and enjoy themselves and in the process of giving them their first taste of happiness for many years, earns their complete love and devotion. Leisl, the eldest child, has fallen in love with Rolf Gruber, the telegram message boy, and in her confusion she seeks the confidence and guidance of Maria.

The Captain intends to remarry and so visits Vienna to bring his finance Elsa Schraeder to meet his family and friends. The Captain and Elsa, with a family friend, Max Detweiler, return to find the children and Maria playing and singing. The Captain is astounded at this but then, caught by the beauty of the children singing and their new vitality, relaxes and allows his love to show through.

The new character that the Captain displays convinces Maria that she has fallen in love with him and in her bewilderment she flees to the Abbey to seek the advice of Mother Abbess who persuades her to return to the Trapp Villa.

The threat of German invasion starts to mount and Elsa and the Captain disagree over their different attitudes to her “anschluss” and their engagement is dissolved.

Captain von Trapp and Maria recognise their love and two weeks later they are married in the abbey. They return from their honeymoon to find that the Germans have invaded Austria and that many of the able-bodied men of the district including Rolf Gruber, have openly shown their support for the Nazis. Leisl is broken-hearted at this and Maria does her best to comfort her.

The Captain is summoned to Berlin to join the German Navy, but is granted a postponement until after the music festival where the family is due to sing. The family is escorted to the concert hall and as they sing their final song they each make their separate exits, not to the waiting German car, but to the sanctuary of the Abbey. They hide in the Abbey until their searchers have passed and then with the blessing of the Nuns, they escape over the mountains they have learned to love so well, to the safety of Switzerland.
