Until 1867, Sullivan wrote mainly religious music. Then he met F. C. Burnand who asked him to compose music for a comic operetta. Sullivan reluctantly agreed – the result was COX AND BOX, which was an immediate success and ran for over 300 performances in London. Sullivan’s title to lasting fame was won by a happy combination of a sense of fun and rhythm together with his gifts for melody and orchestration; qualities which first displayed themselves in COX AND BOX – the forerunner of the ever-popular Gilbert and Sullivan Operas.

Sullivan was a favourite of Queen Victoria who awarded him a knighthood in 1883.   O.G.
