Napier Operatic Society 1887 – 1987 Napier Municipal Theatre, October 25th, 1987.

100 years of musical theatre

Events such as the 1931 earthquake in Hawke’s Bay are more than a frustration 50 years later when a society sets out to explore its origins.

Barrie Browne took up the challenge on behalf of Napier Operatic. Such records that remained were confused. Pencilled notes on the margins of old programmes were examples of misleading and selective memories.

Programme designers who omitted to ensure dates were printed on their creations did nothing to make his task easier. No two pieces of information unearthed by Barrie concurred.

The man was unrelenting, however. His pursuit of notes, memorabilia and newspaper clippings which would confirm the year musical theatre was established in this province eventually led him to 1887. Napier Operatic is one of the Oldest groups in New Zealand. Its members have played a large part in the development of their province.

Barrie was helped in his researches by Helen Wakely, Gerald Brown, James Morgan, Glen Ward, Syd Jago and others. Tonight’s performance, scripted by James Morgan, is only a small mirror of their work.

President’s Message

It is my good fortune to be president of the Napier Operatic Society at the time of its centenary. All who have been closely associated in many ways with this society will feel great pride in its accomplishments over the past 100 years.

Before we launch the society into its second century, I invite you to settle back and review the past
one, a journey rm sure you’ll enjoy.

Tonight’s performance will rekindle some great bouts of nostalgia. Join with me at the end in wishing Napier Operatic Society much success in the future.
