Programme 1992 – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

JOSEPH
and the
Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat

AUGUST 1992

DIRECTOR: Phil Turley

Phil’s first major directing role was back in 1977 when the Napier Operatic Society first produced “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. After this first production Phil became involved with many aspects of theatre, performing in local productions, mostly straight drama, directing for his new school, Havelock North High, and part time broadcasting.

Since then Phil has directed this show several times and says ‘Joseph’ is an amazing show, it’s pure drama and each time I’ve directed it, it has been a challenge. ‘Joseph’ could easily be a song and dance revue but my aim is to tell the story by using song and dance.”

Phil has enjoyed working with his excellent cast and crew for this production and the cast and crew have enjoyed working with him.

CHOREOGRAPHER: Briar Horrocks

Briar started dancing at an early age and began teaching, part time, at 13 and full time on leaving school. In 1978, Briar won the first Choreographic Competition held in New Zealand, her work being mounted by the New Zealand Ballet Company two years later.

She first became involved in theatre in 1964 and since 1989 has choreographed for us “Grease”, “Evita” and “Me and My Girl”.

We are once again delighted to have Briar choreograph our major production this year.

CHOIR MISTRESS: Karyn Briggs

Karyn has been involved with music for many years. She studied piano and singing to diploma level and is the teacher in charge of music at Napier Boys High. She has been involved in theatre for many years, appearing in shows for the Hastings Operatic Society, Frivs and Napier Operatic Society. Karyn has been chorus mistress for several Napier Operatic Society productions including, “Nostalgia”, “An Evening with Gershwin” and “Oliver”.

She has enjoyed working with the 60 members of the chorus and we have enjoyed having her with us.

BAND LEADER: Tim Walton

Tim is currently teaching English and Drama at Havelock North High School. He has been involved in other aspects of theatre including acting and as a director. He is also the Bass player for the popular band “Dusty Rhodes and the Blues Mobile”.

This is the first time Tim has been involved with the Napier Operatic Society and has brought together a very professional team of musicians for this production. Tim has enjoyed his involvement with the Napier Operatic Society and we hope to see him again in the future.

Simon Thomson
as Joseph
Simon has been a member of this Society for the last three years and has appeared in many productions. This is his first major role and he has certainly justified his selection for this role. Simon’s ambition is to make theatre his career. Napier Operatic Society wishes him good luck for his future.

Warren Young
as Pharaoh

The Brothers:
Dion Crouch, Mark Fenwick, Robert Hickey, Kelly Bennett, Rick Behague, Richard Beale, Jonathan Krebs, Ian Gearey, Blair Burtenshaw, Jeff Braid and Daniel Loughnan.

Debbie Harwood
as the Narrator
Debbie’s last production with us was “Jesus Christ Superstar”, and she has since gone onto become a household name in New Zealand performing with “When the Cat’s Away” and recently backing Jimmy Barnes in Australia. Debbie now lives in Melbourne and has rehearsed this part for the show for several weeks before joining the cast in rehearsals two weeks ago. We welcome Debbie back to her home town for this production.

TIM RICE

Music by:
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER

Director: PHIL TURLEY
Choreographer: BRIAR HORROCKS
Choir Mistress: KARYN BRIGGS
Band Leader: TIM WALTON

28th August – 5th September, 1992

In 1968 Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were approached to write a “pop cantata” for a school concert. The result was a twenty minute cantata entitled “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. It did not exactly make world headlines but it did gain interest, including that of impressari’os [impresarios] David Land and Sefton Myers with whom Andrew and Tim signed a three year contract. Within seven months the single of Jesus Christ Superstar was released.

It was the success of Jesus Christ Superstar and the demand for further Webber/Rice productions that propelled Joseph into the limelight with full length productions in the West End and on Broadway. Since then Joseph has continued to delight audiences around the world.

By Arrangement with
WARNER CHAPPELL MUSIC

Twenty four years on, it is intriguing to note that in the year of the first performance the copyright on Joseph was sold by Webber & Rice to Novello & Co for 100 guineas. Novello & Co was subsequently purchased by Filmtrax who continued to own the copyright until April 1989 when Lloyd Webbers own company, The Really Useful Group, purchased it for one million pounds.
