VIENNA

Mention the name of one of the great capitals of the world and, in most cases, simple images are drawn up. For London it is theatre and pageantry, for Paris fashion and frivolity – for Vienna, the image is always music Over its long history, Vienna has been Mecca for musicians. They went to the city with a dream – some achieved fulfilment, some frustration and others disillusionment. It has often been said that “Vienna moves in three-quarter time.” Never was this more true than in the period between the ascendancy of the Strauss family and the onset of the First World War, when the sound of the waltz wafted from ballrooms to the first blush of dawn, and the theatres rang with a succession of light-hearted tuneful operettas.
