Hawke’s Bay Herald-Tribune 1962

Waiwhare School – some 30 miles from Hastings on the Taihape Road – was gay with bunting yesterday, when a special function was held for the opening of the school baths.

Settlers and residents from all over the district attended. Guest speakers were Mr PL Page, secretary manager of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, and the district senior inspector of schools, Mr EJ Watts. Mr KW Lawrence, chairman of the school baths committee, gave an outline history of the building of the baths which had been thought at first to be beyond the means of the school and the district.

But an initial canvass of the district produced the sum of £625 which enabled work to start on the project. The baths were built in two months with the help of voluntary labour.

Mr Lawrence presented the key of the baths to the school chairman, Mr BH Drummond, who said that a school of only 44 children could be proud of the success of such an undertaking.

Presentations were made to Mr Lawrence and Mr D Hoy for the work they had done on the baths. Mr Page recalled his first visit to the school 10 years ago when settlers had first requested building a school in the area.

The district’s interest in, and support for, education, was attested by the present ceremony, said Mr Page.

Mr Watts said there was a lot more to a balanced all-round education than learning the three Rs. Cultural and sporting activities also had to be catered for and the Waiwhare parents had provided much equipment to the school to ensure their children had every opportunity.

Mr Lawrence declared the baths open, and on this signal the schoolchildren, led by Form II pupils, took their first plunge. At night, a social evening was held in Mr Tolley’s woolshed.

When I first got up I thought it wasn’t going to be a good day but it was raining, when I came to school the umbrellas were wet. I was getting the windows ready and John was helping me get the door clean. The big boys put the flags up. All the school people came, so did the mothers and fathers. 60 children and about 70 grown ups. I went in with a jump, and I was going under. I ran out as fast as I could to get an ice-cream. I had two ice creams. But I didn’t want to eat the last one. I went to watch the mouth-to-mouth. David Ward was first. He didn’t know what to do so he blew. At afternoon tea I had some biscuits. I found my Photo was in the paper, it was by Belinda.   Valda Tolley.

On the day the baths were going to be opened it was wet. Dad said “it isn’t going to be a good day”. When I got to school there were six umbrellas on the big court. I helped to get ready. I swept the porch and I cleaned the blackboard. I cleaned the walls too. All the school children were there. There were about 125 people. Kathy [Cathy], Eric and Roger were the first ones in. After they had touched the water we were allowed to jump in. After there was ice-cream. I didn’t have a go with the mouth-to-mouth. I ate a lot at Afternoon tea Teresa made some cake and I ate a piece of it. We had out photo in the paper it was Saturday’s paper.   Diane Ward

On Friday when I woke up I ran to the window to see how good the weather was it as raining and I thought we wouldn’t be having the opening. When I got to school I watched the big room people put up the decorations and I knew that we were having the opening. We all helped tidied up the place. Soon it was lunch time. The people started to come. And. Tony Ritchsin [Richardson] told the people where to go. Peter, Gavin, David Ward and Tony too when there was a car. There were 60 children and 70 grown ups. When they had all come we had a swim and after a while the bell went and we got out. When I got out I was going to have a turn on the mouth to mouth but I didn’t. We had afternoon tea and the next day we saw some photos in the paper.   John Comrie.

We helped to decorate the school. I put my picture out in the porch. In the morning it was raining. Soon the cars came. We went into the baths and sat down. After that Mr Brown said to Cathy, Rodger and Eric get in now and they got upon the edge of the baths and jumped in. Then we all got in. Soon the bell went to get out and we all got out. We went into the sheds and got dressed. When we came out of the shed we got an ice-cream. Then we had afternoon tea. Soon it was a lolly scramble and we ran to get some. The little room went separate from the big room. I got 8 all together and I have one to Janice, Gavin, David Ward, Peter and David Hoy. I had three lollys left. Then we went home.   Wayne Moult

Baths opened. On the day the Bath opened It was wet. Then we did some decorations and I hopped [helped] too. 4 speakers. Soon we went for a swim. Soon we got dressed. Then we had a blue [lolly] scramble. Then there was Afternoon tea. Then we went home.   Unknown

Our friends watched me swimming in the baths. I liked the decorations and the ice cream. We also had a lobby [lolly] scramble.   Robyn Drummond

When the baths opened I didn’t have a swim because O [I] had a cold. I liked the lolly scramble and I got 6 lollies. Daddy threw all the lollies out.   Paula Tolley

I liked all the flags and decorations. I jumped in the water and made a splash. Daddy came to see me swim and he had a cup of tea. It was under the umbrellas.   Stuart Tolley

The day the baths opened was wet but then it got fine. We had sweets and ice-cream. The water was cold.   Barbara Ward
