THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

FEBRUARY Waiwhare school officially closed until the end of Term 1 due to lack of relieving principal. Children now attending Otamauri School. Std – F 2 being taught by Principal O Hutchinson, Juniors by Miss S Evans. Waiwhare roll officially 25. Feb. 20th   Special School Committee meeting confirming the district’s decision to re-open school. Notification the following day of Board’s decision to re-open school.

VISITOR – Miss Cooper, Public Health Nurse

MARCH   District Swimming Sports at Otamauri, overall placing 4th with 34 points.
Civil Defence and First Aid display by HB County Council at Paton’s Airstrip, Otamauri. Mr D Wallis appointed Principal, commencing duties from Term 2, 1978.

Rev McGechie – for Religious Instruction

APRIL   Working bee for firewood. Another to chop the wood. Inter-district D&A Day at Matapiro Domain, Crownthorpe. Waiwhare came 1st in the morning tabloids, 3rd in the relays and 4th in the afternoon events.
School had a shopping day. Also closed for Anzac Day.

MAY   New pump installed. School closed on 5th for holidays.
Re-opened for second term on 22nd. Acting Principal Miss Evans leaving to take up appointment at Khandallah School, Wellington. Mrs S Davidson appointed as reliever in the Junior room. Mr D Wallis takes up position as newly appointed Principal. School roll 26

JUNE   Board advised that existing vacancy for a permanent assistant would be gazetted on June 30, 1978 for commencement in 1979.
Arbor Day Service in conjunction with Conservation Week held at school. Preceded by a Tabloid & Minor Games hour with a few parents joining in, an introduction of staff members Mr D Wallis and Mrs S Davidson to parents of children in their respective classes.
Shopping Day held. Roll – 28
Field trip for whole school to Classic Decor (Napier Tannery ) and the Science Fair in Hastings.

Electrician (repair school baths pump)

JULY   Stock Drive held by School Committee, purpose: raise funds to supplement building costs for a proposed new Store room.
Theft of bus petrol and petrol pump, Taradale Police investigating.
Mr Walters, County Fire Control officer rang regarding revision of organisation controlling Fire Shed near school. Messers L Greville, I Gordon, D Wallis – initial organising committee for this area.
Meeting held concerning the incorporation of a Craft Skills period in Senior Room class programme. Craft programme will commence August 1, 1978, using district personnel and parents wherever applicable.
Waiwhare School Gymnastic Championships held. Champions:   Boys – David Hays   Girls – Leigh Jones
Overall Champion – David Hays
Selection of Winter Sports Teams to compete in Hastings District Primary Schools Sports Assoc.
Winter Team. Held at Otamauri.
Shopping Day.
VISITORS – Sergeant N Smith – Taradale Police
Mr B Musson – Judge for Gymnastics.

AUGUST   Leisure craft classes began. Poker machine work with Miss A Whyte, held for 3 weeks.
Hastings & Districts Winter School Sports held.
Mid-year reports issued.
Senior Room went to the film “Storm Boy”.
School closed on 18th for holidays, re-opened 4th Sept.

SEPTEMBER   At commencement of term roll – 27. Leisure Craft activity – rug making with Mrs S Hays for 2 weeks.
Sunday 17 Sept. – Mrs M Sheild’s residence at Waiwhare burned to ground. Fire Unit plus committee members in attendance. Committee Member G Sheild in residence at time of fire. No injuries.
Other fire also involved. ie Kaweka Forest Unit, Sherenden & Hastings Fire Brigade.
VISITORS – Mr Keller – Social Welfare Worker

Mr R Miles – County Dangerous Roads Inspector

OCTOBER   Senior Room visited Golf Range at Mangateretere and Hastings Police Station. Children from S1 and 2 went to Otamauri School to participate in Padder Tennis. Won 13-7.
Carpenter placed security gates on Bus Shed and fixed fireplaces at house and school.
Working Bee to clean pool, paint wall and playground markings, tidy storeroom, de-limb trees. District meeting to establish fire groups to use Unit housed in River Rd.
Oct. 19 – Governor General holiday ( Hawke’s Bay Royal Show Day) school closed.
School Committee holiday following day, school closed. Shopping Day no. 4.
Leisure Craft Activity – cooking “Bread buns and omelettes” with Mrs G Wallis
VISITORS – Mr B Davy – Station Officer Hastings Fire Station.
District Health Nurse.

NOVEMBER   Pool emptied and begun filling. Junior Room guests of Senior Room Luncheon (Hamburgers).
Parents assisted in this Leisure Craft activity. Senior Room visited Sherenden to play Padder Tennis, won 12-4. Junior Room visited Post Office and Hastings Public Library
Hastings and District Athletic Sports held at Nelson Park. Eight year olds and upwards attended from our school. Successes by Craig Greville, Leigh Jones, Mark Andrews.
Annual Pet Day held, all families attended. Outside Judges (Mrs F Fountaine, Mrs B Hoy, Mrs G Wallis officiated).
School used as Polling Booth for Government General Elections.
District Fire Drill. Shopping Day No.5. School closed.

DECEMBER   Annual School Prize Giving held. Items given by children plus addresses by Principal and Committee Chairman.

Sports Plaque donated by Mr & Mrs L Greville to be contested yearly.
During last week of school, school party held. School closed December 15 and will re-commence 31st January.
