THE YEAR’S ACTIVITIES AND GENERAL INFORMATION

TERM 1, 1981

2 February   Commencement or term 1, 1981. Staff: Mrs GP Wallis newly appointed junior class teacher. Mr DL Wallis principal.
Teacher’s aide yet to be appointed – Mrs J Greville temporarily filling in.
3 February   PHN routine visit.
5 February   Committee meeting.
6 February   Waitangi day. School closed.
10 February   Mrs J Davidson commenced duties as teacher’s aide.
16 February   Rural adviser paid visit to discuss planning / organisation / curriculum needs with Mrs GP Wallis.

17 February   PHN routine visit.
19 February   Mr D Unwin visited school to repair / assess interior of junior room, fire grates, bench seats, return of broken fumiture, storm water damage, pool chemical shed / filter, house spouting / hot water supply / chimney flashing.
19 February   Plumber replaced water pipes into house, repaired flashing / spouting.
24 February   Inter-school swimming sports held at Sherenden.
4 March   PHN – routine visit.
11 March   Hastings primary school’s sports association swimming sports held at Frimley Aquatic Centre.
12 March   Mr T Dymond – school inspector – paid a routine visit. Asked for extra ancillary hours /discussed staff toilet.
16 March   Mrs GP Wallis attended maths refresher course at Otamauri. Mrs K Goulding relieved in the junior room.
17 March   Rev. McGechie visited.
23 March   Shopping day No. 1.
26 March   Committee meeting at school.
31 March   Speech therapist – Alison Townsend made visit to school to check referrals.
14 April   PHN – routine visit.
16 April   Fotek photographers made a visit to school to take school and individual/family photos.
17-21 April   Easter vacation.
16 April   Principal and Mr D Ward made a visit to Mangateretere to view adventure playground complex and later to the Hawke’s Bay Education Board to discuss plans.
21 April   School committee meeting held at school.
27 April Health department official made routine 3 yearly visit to inspect school facilities.
Biennial election of school committee held at Waiwhare School. A very good attendance was observed.

28 April   PHN visited. Routine visit.
4 May   Rural adviser visited to discuss language and reading programmes in the school.
8 May   End of term 1 — holidays.

TERM 2, 1981

25 May   Commencement of Term 2, 1981. Roll 27.
26 May   PHN visited.
1 June   Queen’s Birthday School closed.
2 June   Principal attended NZEI meeting at Pukehamoamoa School to discuss AGM 1981.
Carpenter from Education Board began renovations to junior room, staff toilet, house bathroom and classroom maintenance.
3 June   Visited by Dental Nurses (Central School) for routine visit – school children/pre-schoolers.
9 June   Audio-visual testing at the school (Mrs Stichbury) PHN routine visit – plus commencement of Social Living Health Unit with Mrs J Price as resource person.
10 June   Mrs GP Wallis attended in-service course at Mayfair School audio-visual aides. Mrs K Goulding relieved in the junior room.
13 June   School principal and wife plus school committee chairman, secretary, with spouses attended a dinner at Mrs J Graham’s residence (ward member) along with other Hastings country school principals and committees. A large attendance was noted and an enjoyable evening overall.
18 June   School committee meeting held at the school.
25 June   Inter-school winter sports at Crownthorpe.
26 June   Shopping day no.2. School closed.
30 June   PHN Health studies with whole school. A Walters, county fire officer – routine visit.
2 July   Inter-school sports at Crownthorpe. School bus used for transport.
7 July   The whole school went on a field trip to the Home Style Bakery Onekawa (a.m.), followed by a visit to the trade an Industries fair, Ahuriri, in the afternoon.

14 July   PHN visited on routine visit.
16 July   Inter-school sports at Crownthorpe.
20 July   Shopping day no. 3. School closed. 23 July   Inter-school sports at Crownthorpe.
29 July   Mothers attended a workshop session in the junior room to prepare reading/language/mathematics equipment. Well attended – on-going. Bus inspector carried out term two inspection on bus.
3 August   Philippa Kay enrolled. Total 29.
7 August   Principals, assistants and teacher’s aides of Taihape road county schools (Pukehamoamoa, Crownthorpe, Sherenden, Otamauri and Waiwhare) attended smorgasbord meal at DB Heretaunga Hotel, Hastings, for end-of-term dine and dance evening.
11 August   PHN routine visit. Evaluation of health units carried out in term 2.
18 August   Mr L Wattam, transport officer from Education Board visited to discuss timetable implications and re-survey of bus routes in order that these may be rectified – possibility of a 2nd school bus based upon extremes of timetable to be pursued. Mr M Barnett also attended along with full committee support to be involved in discussion.
19 August   School committee meeting held at the school 7.30 pm
20 August. Senior girls competed in netball in the primary schools sports association tournament in Hastings.
21 August   End of term – long, cold and with frequencies of rain & sleet.

TERM 3, 1981

6 September   Snow surrounded the school/house and all over the district. Lasted until mid morning. A fine day but quite cold with the breeze that was blowing.
7 September   Commencement of Term 3. No enrolments. Roll existing at 29.
9 September   Visit by Traffic Instructor Mr D Harwood. Discussed forthcoming ideas for work in school with staff members. (Commence 5/10/81. )
15 September   PHN visited – Routine.
17 September   Inter-school Summer Sports held at Sherenden for S1 – Fm 2.
23 September   School committee meeting held at the school.
24 September   Inter-school summer sports at Sherenden School.
6&7 October   Traffic Instructor visited schools for unit work.
7 October   School gymnastic championships 1981.
8 October   Field Visit into town – courthouse, senior; Apple Radio, junior; Mrs J Graham’s poultry farm.
12 October   Shopping day No.4. School closed.
14 October   School Committee meeting at School. School Bus No 2 began operation on Taihape Road East, Tareha/Willowford and Kaweka Forest Bus Route. Enrolment Mark Barnett. Total 30.
15 October   Inter-school Summer Sports at Crownthorpe.
22 October   School Committee Holiday. School closed for long weekend, namely Labour Weekend/ Hawke’s Bay Anniversary.
27 October   Principal, Mr DL. Wallis, attended Massey University Examination in Napier. Mrs K Goulding relieved.
Enrolment – Glen Nicholls. Total 31.
29 October   Enrolment – Tony Worsley (Year 2.) Total 32.
2 November   Principal attended examination (ASTU). Mrs K Goulding relieved.
3 November   “D&A Day” held at Matapiro Domain. Waiwhare School very successful and very well supported by parent attendance. (Only 1 family not represented). School Committee working bee and meeting to discuss Education Boards visit.
10 November   Education Board -Mr Bell, Mr Halford and wife, Mr B Wilkins, Mrs J Graham visited on a goodwill visit. Issue of new Infant Room discussed and conditions of such were acknowledged. Finance limits were suggested by Education Board which could affect chances of new room replacement. School committee meeting held at the school.
9-12 November   Mrs K Goulding relieved in junior room. Mrs GP Wallis absent.
12 November   Inter-school summer sports held at Waiwhare, attended by all district schools.
16-18 November   Mrs GP Wallis absent. Mrs K Goulding relieved.

17 November   Police Dogs from Napier Police performed at the School. This was attended by District Schools and parents alike. Sir Richard Harrison visited the School at request of Principal to discuss prospects of a new classroom to replace Junior Room.
18 November   Information received from Education Board notifying us of a new classroom to replace Junior Room for 1982.
19 November   Indoor Section of Pet Day held in classrooms. Day was wet so outdoor activities were postponed until Monday 23/11/81.
New Indoor Events: Models/Constructions
Farm Scenes   Mrs H Arthur officiated.
20 November   ‘Teacher Only’ Refresher Course held at Paki Paki Marae “Maoritanga in the School”. Principal attended – children of the Senior Room did not attend school.
21 November   Working Bee at School to prepare site for new School Building. Turn out of all but three families – excellent.
23 November   Outdoor Section of Pet Day held at the School. Very enjoyable.
26 November   Mr D Unwin, Building Supervisor, called to inspect building site and drop off spare chairs.
30 November   Shopping Day No.5. School Closed.
1 December   Inter-school Sports at Sherenden. School Committee meeting held at the school. School Dental Nurses made a check-up visit to the school for pupils and pre-schoolers.
2 December   School Bus Inspector H Boulton made visit to the school to inspect ED 1212 and ED 1003.
9 December   Senior Room went to Puketitiri and Ball ‘s clearing with Mr W Drayton (Kaweka Forest Vehicles) across from Dampney Road, and Tutaekuri River.
Family Barbecue held at the school. Games involving parents were very [popular?] namely Danish Rounders, Softball. Very much enjoyed.
11 December   Prize giving for 1981. Complete and full attendance. Very hot day.

Mr L Shannon, Science Adviser, visited to discuss 3 year Science Programme. He was also our official guest at the prize giving.
16 December   New Classroom to replace the existing Junior Room was put on new site by contractors.
