18 March   Lance Winn, NZEI rep., visited to discuss with staff the latest developments with the State Sector Bill.  The school donated $100 to the Save Camp Kaitawa Fund.  This money came from what was not used on the school’s recent trip to the camp.

15 April   I attended a course on the new physical education syllabus, held at Parkvale School.  Rose Campbell relieved in my room.

19 April   Jill Thomas, a representative of the Red Cross, came to talk to the children about the work of the Red Cross.

18-22 April   The school participated in a book week where each child completed a number of activities related to books.  Two firms had books on display for sale.  On Thursday parents were invited to look over these books and purchase any they wished to.  Forty percent of all sales went to the school so at the end of the day the school spent $430 on books for its library.

22 April   The school visited Fantasyland and the Hastings Public Library in connection with the study on books.

19 April   The school committee agreed to purchase a new photocopier for the school.  The new machine is a Toshiba BD 5110 and has been purchased from the Napier Business Centre for $4640. The machine has been in the school for a month on trial.

Book day – children dressed up as book characters.

18 August   The teachers attended day at Crownthorpe where we looked at computers and their uses in schools.  We were shown how to use the computer with process writing and also its use with interactive fiction.  We came to the conclusion that the computer would be a high motivator of children and ideally one in each room would be warranted.  But because of the high cost of the equipment this would be impossible to achieve.

25 August    School’s fancy dress ball was held at Sherenden Hall.  This year we used a theme for the evening, “Dancing Through the Ages”.  Pupils and parents performed a number of dances from the past including the haka, Charleston, can-can, the bunny hop, the twist and disco.  Folk dances were also performed.  The evening was extremely successful despite having a breakdown with the music and me having to make a mad dash back to school to grab an alternative record player and records.

26 August   School ended at 2.30 for the August holidays.
Nicky and Jacqui White have withdrawn.  School roll has dropped dramatically, now 46.
