Materials and Tools Required for Weekend Schools.
Throwing Classes Estelle Martin.
As many wheels as possible for the students and, if possible, an electric wheel for the tutor. Students to provide usual tools: Cutting wire, batts, turning tools, Basin for water, towel etc. Clay required 28 – 56 lbs each (Mapua XXX if available or whatever the student normally uses.
Slab-building classes Bruce Martin.
As much table space as possible (4 -6 sq. feet per person min.) Some asbestos-cement sheets (builders off-cuts) to work on and to dry clay slabs. Clay: as above. Tools: Pair notched sticks (¼, ⅜ notches most suitable) Old flat knife. (Putty knife is ideal.) 8″ Carpenters square
Steel ruler, pencil, stiff cardboard & sissors for pattern making.
A container for slurry and an old toothbrush. A banding wheel or turntable if available. Cutting wire. (Model airplane control-line wire most suitable.)
Copeing-saw blade. (One packet would be enough for everyone. Small wooden modeling tools or a broken wooden peg.
Clay: To speed the process it is a good idea to have each student bring some prepared slabs. Six slabs 6″ square or larger and about ¼” thick and semi hardened would be enough to start.
Except for the wheel and some clay for Estelle we will provide our own tools and clay for the slab-building.
If any person cannot provide any item they need not be concerned as they can always borrow things from others. The above list would be the ideal but is to be used as a guide only.
