JEAN BALLANTYNE, Choreographer and Ballet Mistress for “Zip Goes a Million,” needs no introduction to Hawke’s Bay Theatre audiences, for she has been associated with amateur productions for many years, as well as having her own Studio in Hastings.

In welcoming her to our midst, we express the hope that in the years to come she will again contribute to our productions her wide experience in the dancing field.

About…

“ZIP GOES A MILLION”

This musical version of the well-known American farce, “Brewster’s Millions” brought George Formby to London’s West End in the role of Percy Piggott for his first appearance as star of a musical. That the show succeeded in providing him with one of the biggest triumphs of his career was amply proved by the packed and happy audiences at the Palace Theatre from November, 1951, to March, 1953, whilst included in this successful season was a Royal Command Performance. Eric Maschwitz’s skill in adapting the piece, with George Posford’s music, made of this new show a first-rate musical and a sturdy rival for any importation from Broadway.

Based on an idea by Winchell Smith and Byron Ongley, the story will be familiar to all those who are acquainted with “Brewster’s Millions.” It tells of the hilarious adventures of Percy Piggott, a simple Englishman from the North, who goes to America to claim a fortune, together with his sweetheart, Sally Whittle, and her mother, Motty, only to find that he must get rid of a million dollars by a certain date to inherit the stupendous legacy of seven millions. Percy discovers that it is not so easy to get rid of a million dollars, especially when he is not allowed to tell anyone the reason.

With its uproarious situations, lavish settings and costumes, spectacular ballets, catchy and delightful melodies, “Zip Goes a Million” is the zippiest, most sparkling musical you have seen for a very long time – a worthy successor to the best musicals of the past.

KERSHAWS LTD.
This firm, being so long in business has often been asked in what year were we established.
Well we are not sure ourselves, but by old office records it was well before the S.S.Northumberland was wrecked on the Petane beach in antique parlance, could be circa 1884.
Our varied customers are embodied in the poem:
Every day when the weather’s fine
The prams go by in an endless line,
Prams of brown and prams of blue,
Family prams and prams brand new;
And pushing the prams along the street,
Are trudging mothers on weary feet –
And in every pram it is quaint to know.
Is a man or woman in embryo.
A few more years and each will be
A doctor, or clerk, or wise M.P. –
Perhaps a professor in cap and gown –
Perhaps a mayor in a N.Z. Town!
(And if they are baby girls why then, –
They are the future mothers of men!)
O babies whatever in time you are –
Whether you foot it or keep a car –
Remember that once you rode the street.
Pushed by a mother with weary feet.
And whatever heights you may reach some day.
She gave you the first push on your way.
