Newspaper Article 1938 – Empire Games

It is not every mother who has an athletic daughter, or at any rate, not one in the Empire Games team. Mrs Oswald Tong has just come back from a trip to Sydney, where she saw her daughter, Rona, win laurels for New Zealand by coming third in the 80 metres hurdles, in time just one-fifth of a second below the world record. “It was a great thrill,” said Mrs Tong, “to see the New Zealand flag go up so often, and also to see my daughter on the Victory Stand.”
