As a musical I place “Oklahoma” tops with “Carousel” . . . my other favourite. It has a good story, enough drama to give it weight and a lot of good comedy to give it universal appeal for all age groups. As for the music, it’s lilting, rousing, nostalgic, catchy and dramatic, and there is an excellent ballet that is an integral part of the story. Above all it is a great, bouncy, fun-show . . . a real happening for both audience and cast.
Laurie Swindell   PRODUCER

Musically, I think Oklahoma is one of the great successes of the theatre. Comedy numbers, romantic ballads, lusty square dances, dainty lilting songs and finally the special Oklahoma chorus, which in my opinion is the most rousing number of any musical I have been associated with. I know you will enjoy the show.
Harry Cooper   MUSICAL DIRECTOR

What do I think of “Oklahoma”?
To me, this is a real play about real people, living and loving, being kind, being cruel – poor Jud. The music fits and clothes with the feeling of colour of that period in time – going West. I think “Oklahoma’s O.K. !!”
Mary Bell   CHORAL DIRECTOR

There are not many shows that offer a great many opportunities for dancers to show their versatility. Oklahoma is on exception. Gay simplicity, robust vigorous dancing and the strong dramatic “Dream Ballet” present a wonderful challenge to the ballet to show their capability, not only to be good dancers, but also proficient actresses and actors.

PATRICIA ALDERSLEY as Laurey
GORDON COLLINS as Curly
On stage together for the first time Patricia and Gordon combine their outstanding talents playing the lead roles of Laurey and Curly. Patricia now lives in the South Island with her husband and three  sons where she still finds time for her theatrical ventures. She has taken leading roles in several musicals as well as winning the South Island “Julie Andrews” contest. She is well remembered in our previous productions of “Carousel” and “South Pacific”.

Welcome back Patricia.

Gordon needs no introduction to Hawke’s Bay audiences. This is his third leading role with our company namely “Showboat”, “Pajama Game” and now “Oklahoma”. Possessing a superb baritone voice and a smooth easy stage presence he is a happy choice for the role of the cowboy Curly McClain.

YVONNE HOWMAN
Yvonne has our thanks and admiration for agreeing to understudy the role of Laurey. She has a beautiful voice and is a talented actress having played several roles for the Hastings Light Opera Co. and the Oamaru Society.

MARY REID as Aunt Eller
PATRICIA O’LEARY as Aunt Katie Mae
Mary’s beautiful voice is well known to theatregoers here as well as overseas. She has toured Australia and America and almost every city in New Zealand. She portrayed “Lady Thiang ‘ in our production “The King and I” and we are indeed fortunate to have her with us again this year.

Particia [Patricia] O’Leary has taken part in almost all our productions. Her role as Katie May is most entertaining and shows us all her fine singing and acting ability.

JUDITH CATER as Ado Annie   KEITH BRAZIER as Will Parker

Judith and Keith as a team have entertained Hawke’s Bay audiences many times with their terrific flair for comedy.

Judith is well known to all not only as a very talented actress but also as a fine dancer. Her roles in “Showboat”, “Can Can”, “Pajama Game” to name a few are well remembered and we are indeed lucky to have someone of her outstanding ability to play Ado Annie in this production.

Keith is undoubtedly one of the Company’s most accomplished comedians. He has played comedy parts in ten of our productions each time varying his performance with remarkable ability. The singing dancing role of Will Parker shows us yet another side of his versatility.

The Story of Oklahoma!

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s sunny lilting musical about the farmer and the cowman in the Oklahoma territory has the appeal that makes it heartwarming and the simplicity that makes it great and the years – and other musicals – that have passed since its advent only make these qualities more apparent and appreciated.

“Oklahoma’s” instant phenomenal success in 1943 was certainly not due to its plot, which is based on Lynn Riggs “Green Grow the Lilacs” and not unlike the stock situation of most musical comedies – a young handsome hero and heroine separated by circumstances through most of the action and united at the end. But where this show broke the mould of musical comedy was its integration of choreography, music and lyrics with the plot and characters.

It is a truism today that Agnes De Mille’s choreography for “Oklahoma” revolutionised the concept of the dance in the legitimate theatre and made it an art rather than a decoration Her choreography of American folk dance in theatrical terms, gave expression to the vigorous, cocksure and hopeful pioneer spirit which characterised those who saw their territory become a State. It was American in its subject matter, flavour, treatment and art. The American musical comedy had come of age.

It now remains to meet the people who form the characters of this famous modern musical. Laurey Williams niece of Aunt Eller and Katie May, torn between her unformed affections for Curly the cowboy and Jud Fry, the hired hand, whose attentions cause her uneasy forebodings. The delight of her friend, Ado Annie Carnes, who, to use her own words, “Once I was as thin as a bean-pole, but since I rounded out a little the boys all act different to me,” and the object of her affections – Will Parker the cowboy – and Ali Hakim, the pedlar man whose persuasive ways land him in many a difficult situation. The Aunts Eller and Katie May, with their rough but homely kindness; Gertie Cummings. third member of the romantic triangle and the person who causes Laurey much concern. Andrew Carnes, father of Ado Annie, who lays down the law – with a shotgun, the Ike Skidmores. Cord Elams; in fact, the farmers and the cowmen, their wives and daughters who bring to the stage all the colour and excitement that this great musical contains.

We hope that you all will have a happy evening with “OKLAHOMA”.

The Hastings Musical Comedy Company has revived the popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Oklahoma” and present it as our major production for 1970.

Our aim is to stimulate interest in live theatre, and all its spheres: acting, singing, dancing, painting, building scenery and all the artistic talents required to stage a musical comedy. Hard work, enthusiasm and enjoyment are the keys to success and “Oklahoma” has been all of these to us.

Our Society has a record Subscribing Membership for 1970, this is stimulating and we would take this opportunity to thank those who have joined our Company.

We look forward to 1970 with great expectation as it is our 21st year and we hope you, the Theatre-going public of Hawke’s Bay, will be with us when we present our 21st production.

THE DREAM BALLET
The Ballet depicts Laurey’s problems, her love for Curly and the frightening foreboding she has of Jud. As the ballet unfolds with the warmth and devotion of Laurey’s friends, and the unwelcome entrance of the Dance Hall Girls, the story of Laurey’s dream is revealed.
