PRESIDENT’S REPORT

After last year’s outstanding success with “The Desert Song” our company was placed in the invidious position of choosing a show for this year that was not only of the same high standard musically as “The Desert Song”, but also had public appeal. In choosing “White Horse Inn” we hope we have achieved this.

This year we have one of the largest choruses, numbering over forty, and one of the most enthusiastic that we have ever assembled on stage, and I am sure that with the usual expert guidance of our producer, Sadie Brown; the appealing musical interpretation of Ngaire Shand the Musical Director and her authentically clad Austrian orchestra; and the gay and boisterous dances of Choreographer Joan McVicar, I feel confident that we will have given you all a night’s entertainment you will long remember.

Production Team…

A lot of hard exacting work, but well worthwhile. This is the thoughts of us all, as you, our patrons listen and enjoy – and I know you will – the Hastings Light Opera Company’s 1972 “Inn” Show, “White Horse Inn”. I am proud to be associated with them all in this memorable Musical.

Producer
Sadie Brown

In this production we have aimed at creating an authentic “Viennese” sound and our orchestral combination has been designed to help give this effect.

We have enjoyed working with this atmosphere and hope that you, our audience, will derive pleasure from it also.

I must extend a personal thanks to all members of the Company for their help and co-operation during this production.

Musical Director
Ngaire Shand

It is my pleasure to once again be associated with the Hastings Light Opera Company. The enthusiasm and co-operation has been excellent and I have enjoyed “White Horse Inn” tremendously.

Choreographer
Joan McVicar

The Story of “White Horse Inn”

Josepha Vogelhuber, the attractive proprietress of the “White Horse Inn”, has sacked five head waiters since the death of her husband three years ago. Now she finds that the present head waiter, Leopold, like his predecessors, is in love with her. Josepha, however, cares only for a regular visitor to the Inn – Valentine Sutton, a young English solicitor.

Prior to his arrival, the lake steamer, “Emperor Franz Joseph”, brings a party of tourists to St. Wolfgang. The tourists include an underwear manufacturer, John Ehenezer Grinkle, and his daughter, Ottoline. Since Sutton represents a rival underwear firm, Grinkle dislikes the young solicitor, hut does not realise until too late that Ottoline and Sutton are falling in love.

Other visitors to the Inn include Professor Hinzel, Gretel, his daughter, and Sigismund Smith, Grinkle’s business rival. They are, however, eclipsed in importance by the Emperor, who arrives to open the shooting season.

Having sacked Leopold, Josepha is forced to reinstate him so that the “White Horse Inn” may fittingly receive the royal guest.

The kindly Emperor helps Josepha to see to whom her heart really belongs; Grinkle unwittingly encourages his daughter to marry his enemy, Sutton; the hand of the poor Professor’s daughter is won by her millionaire suitor and to complete the happy picture, the two opposing business concerns amalgamate to make a “combination” unique in its promise for the future.

The original “White Horse Inn”

Above is a reproduction of a photograph of the original “White Horse Inn”. This picturesque hotel is situated in St. Wolfgang, on the banks of Wolfgangsee, surrounded by mountains – one of the most idyllic and beautiful holiday resorts in the whole of Austria. The “Inn” is actually a collection of five houses, which were joined to become the hotel we know today. The first mention of the “Inn” was in 1440 when it was recorded in a chronicle of the day.

The present owners, the Peter family, purchased the property in 1912 and since that time, it has become world renowned.
