PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the Hastings Operatic Society’s production of “The Sound of Music.” The society is very much part of your community and I am aware its fortunes are followed by many. Our aim is to provide a cultural outlet for our members, both young and old, and at the same time provide quality entertainment for our audiences. “The Sound of Music” was performed by our society nine years ago in this same theatre, this magnificent production is for you again, and another generation. We feel you will be well pleased. A show of this magnitude demands co-operation and discipline, and praise must go to our enthusiastic and hard-working team under the very experienced and capable leadership of director Pat Snoxell. Our desire is your pleasure and your appreciation and enjoyment of this evening’s performance will be just reward for their efforts. In conclusion I would like to thank you for your support over the years and sincerely wish it to continue.

The Story of
Maria von Trapp
and
The Sound of Music
“This production will most happily reflect the story of my life.” Maria von Trapp.
Based on the true life story of the Baroness von Trapp, The Sound of Music was Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s last musical collaboration and turned out to be their greatest hit. The true story began in the golden days of the thirties. When Fraulein Maria Rainer was serving as a postulant nun in Nonnberg Abbey near Salzburg, Austria. She was sent by the Mother Abbess to be governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp who on first meeting appeared a stern man who kept his children strictly disciplined. Maria brought a happier atmosphere to this regimented home and not only the children but also their father fell in love with her. The couple were later married in a splendid ceremony at Nonnberg Abbey. During her time as governess Maria has taught the children to sing and the family formed a charming and successful singing group taking part in many festivals around Austria and Europe. This all came to an end when the Nazis annexed Austria in 1938. The Captain was a patriotic Austrian and would not compromise his views. Consequently his family’s safety was in jeopardy. They were forced to escape to neutral Switzerland and after crossing Europe arrived in the United States. Initially they found life there strange but their talents as a singing group stood them in good stead and throughout the war they toured America.
After the Baron’s death in 1947, the Baroness wrote her autobiography. This book was made into a highly successful German film. It received an American showing in a dubbed version in a cinema in New York.
When Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein heard the story of Maria Rainer (von Trapp). they must have been intrigued with the fairy tale quality of her life. Their musical, The Sound of Music, ran for 1,443 performances on Broadway, with Mary Martin as the original “Maria “. It was the last show Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote, as Oscar Hammerstein died a few months after the New York opening. The evocative song “Eidelweiss [Edelweiss]” was their last composition as a team.
SYNOPSIS
The story is a true one, based in Salzberg, [Salzburg] Austria. It tells of Maria, a young postulant, too much of a tomboy for the Benedictine Abbey at which she had hoped to make her vocation as a nun. She is sent to be governess to a family of seven motherless children who live with their wealthy and austere father. Baron Georg von Trapp of the Austrian Navy.
Maria’s growing rapport with the children, especially in music, her romance and eventual marriage to the stern captain, blossom as the story unfolds. When Nazi Germany (Anschluss) overran Austria, the Captain, a true Austrian patriot, fled, taking his new wife, Maria, and the seven children with him. Their escape over the Alps into Switzerland led eventually to their new life in America.

PAT SNOXELL
DIRECTOR
Pat is one of the most versatile Directors working in the amateur theatre – he brings to our society the experience of over a hundred previous productions. He has directed Operatic Shows, Musical Revues, Pantomimes and Gang Shows for most of the amateur production companies in the lower North Island. Recent shows have included “Wizard of Oz,” “Oliver!” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Carousel,” as well as productions of “The Sound of Music” for Dannevirke and Palmerston North Societies. He is currently working on the 25th jubilee production of the Manawatu Gang Show, followed by “Man of La Mancha” for Palmerston North Operatic Society. He thoroughly enjoys working in Hawke’s Bay but wishes it was a bit closer to the Manawatu.
NANETTE ROBERTS
VOCAL DIRECTOR
Nanette is well known throughout Hawke’s Bay for her musical ability. She has been Chorus Mistress for the Hastings Operatic Society for many years, including the Society’s production of “The Sound of Music” in 1979, “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Oliver!” Nanette directed the Vienna Cameos and Roman Serenade in the society’s Aubyn theatre. Nanette has been associated with music in schools for many years and is helping Karamu High Schools with “Footrot Flats” at the moment. She also has private piano pupils and conducts and leads the Mayfair Townwomens [Townswomens’] Guild Choir, and is organist and choir mistress for St. Peter’s Church
WARWICK CURTIS
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Warwick began public performances as a six year old soprano soloist with “Uncle Tom’s IZB Radio Choir.” His interest in Opera, light and grand, began with participation in “Merrie England” under the direction of Harry Luscumbe, founder of the Auckland Dorian Singers. Warwick has performed in, and directed numerous stage productions. In 1981 he was Musical Director for the Hastings Operatic Society’s production of “Oliver!” He spends most of his time assisting schools throughout the province in his position of District Musical Advisor, Hawke’s Bay. A strong interest in arranging music completes a very full musical life.
CORINNE BOWEY
CHOREOGRAPHER
Corrine, at 18, already has immense background of Choreography, starting with a production at Hastings Intermediate when she was 12. Two Christmas Shows for Musical Comedy Company, three productions for Karamu High School plus “Footrot Flats” to be staged in April, are amongst her accomplishments. ‘Westside Story’ was her favourite, in addition to the choreography she played the part of Anita. In 1987 Corrine gained First Place with the Rhythmic Dance group at the Gymnastic Festival. Her experience of teaching modern jazz for three years, plus aerobics, and her knowledge of American Jazz, tap and ballet has been a great asset to her choreographic work.
JULIE WILLIAMS
as MARIA
Julie is no stranger to the stage having made her debut in “The Sound of Music” twenty years ago in Napier, playing the youngest role of Gretl. She is thrilled to be playing Maria in this production, as she considers it to be one of the most challenging and demanding roles in amateur operatics. Julie lives in Taradale and has performed many times with the Napier Operatic Society including the lead roles in “Oklahoma” and “Man of La Mancha.” She is also a member of the Hawke’s Bay Song and Opera Workshop and is currently taking vocal coaching with Napier’s Dawn Unsworth with whom she has been a pupil for many years.
KEITH MARSHALL
as CAPT. von TRAPP
Keith, born in Scotland, moved to New Zealand with his family in 1964. He attended St Andrew’s College in Christchurch, where he had his first involvement in the Theatre taking the lead in a school production of “Sergeant Musgrave’s Dance. ” He went on to major in Psychology at Canterbury University, before two years overseas travel. Keith moved to Hastings in 1986 and is currently working as a Child Psychologist at Hastings Hospital. With the encouragement of a friend he auditioned for a small part in “The Sound of Music ” and to his surprise found himself in the role of Captain von Trapp. He has enjoyed the challenge and fun of working with the cast and crew in this, his first musical.
ELAINE GOODWIN
as MOTHER ABBESS
Elaine joined broadcasting in 1968 at station 3ZB, Christchurch, transferring to Hawke’s Bay where she was with 2ZC for 14 years. Her involvement in choral work takes up much of her time. She is a foundation member of the Hawke’s Bay Song and Opera Workshop, and has sung in most of their productions, including the role of Zita in Puccini’s “Gianni Schicci” in 1986, and as the Monitor and Nursing Sister in Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” last year. She played the role of Lady Sangazure in the Napier Operatic Society’s centennial production of “The Sorcerer.” Elaine has studied with Emily Mair for a short time, and with Beatrice Webster for 10 years.

SNIPPETS FROM THE LONDON STAGE PRODUCTION
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
‘The Sound of Music’ opened in New York on 16 November, 1959 and ran for almost four years, toured America for nearly three years, won six Tony awards including Best Musical and opened at London’s Palace Theatre on 18 May, 1961. ‘The Sound of Music’ reached an even wider audience through the award film released in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
The opportunity of re-staging this now world famous musical was given to the young producer Ross Taylor who directed the 1979 revised production of ‘The King and I’ starring Yul Brynner at the London Palladium, which has played to capacity houses for over four years.
OVER 10,000 CHILDREN AUDITIONED
The task of establishing an all-star cast was not made any easier by the fact that over 10,000 young aspiring auditionees were waiting to display their talents for the parts of the seven children of Captain Von Trapp. The overall auditions for the chorus and children took over six months to complete and many of the singers chosen for the chorus came from Opera companies all over the world. The venue for the staging of the production was the Apollo Victoria Theatre which was completely renovated and refurbished for the show. The two years work involved in staging one of the most lavish productions ever mounted came to fruition on 17 August, 1981, almost twenty years from the original production opening.
