Introduction and Acknowledgements

This book arose from the third national Koorey Family Reunion, which was held in Hastings at Easter 2011. (The first reunion was in Wanganui in 1981, and the second in Auckland in 1991.)

During the reunion in Hastings, a draft of this book was on display in an effort to update family information, and to give family members an opportunity to correct any errors. As with most similar projects, the finished product is a direct reflection of the detail provided and, in this case, many of the family have contributed to making this as accurate a record as possible. In this regard, I would like to thank all those who have contributed before, during and since the reunion.

In compiling the history of the family and the Lebanon, I have referred to the previous reunion booklets produced in 1981 and 1991. In particular, I owe a great deal of thanks to Greg Devine, whose detailed research produced much of the history for the 1991 reunion booklet.  In addition, I have included various articles from the Internet, and from some published works, with the latter acknowledged in the text.

An explanation of the numbering system used in the index of names is necessary. In searching for a particular family member, the reader will find the names in the index in alphabetical order, and spouses listed under their maiden names. An example, from the first page of the index, is:

(Each entry is also colour-coded, and the key is on the first page of the index.)

The first number (in brackets) refers to the generation since Mark, so Oliver Adams is 6th generation from him. (If you subtract 2, that is Mark and Halim, this makes Oliver a 4th generation New Zealander.)

The next number – 1 – denotes that Oliver is a descendant of Mark – everyone’s first number will be 1.
The next number – 1 – denotes that Oliver is descended from Mark”’s 1st child (Halim).
The next number – 4 – denotes that Oliver is descended from Halim’s 4th child (Lawrence/Laurie).
The next number – 1 – denotes that Oliver is descended from Laurie’s 1st child (Lawrence/Larry).
The next number – 5 – denotes that Oliver is descended from Larry’s 4th child (Phillipa).
The last number in the sequence is Oliver’s own place in his family (he is the eldest).

The number on the end of the line is the page number where all of Oliver’s details can be found.

A small * symbol at the end of the number sequence denotes that there is another partner or spouse of that family member, whose details will also be in the same general area of the book. If one of the numbers has a small letter after it, this denotes a child of the successive partner or spouse. (The first child is ‘a’, the second ‘b’ and so on.)
