1992

TERM 1, 1992

3 February   The school opened with a roll of 40.
Staff – Mrs Pam Gunson NE – Std 1
Mr Tony Simons Std 4 – Form 2, Principal
Mrs Anne Sherwood -part-time relieving teacher
Mrs Carol Ayres Teacher’s Aide/School secretary.
Pam has been given the opportunity to train as a reading Recovery Teacher and will be involved in her training and in working with children for the remainder of the year.  Anne Sherwood has been appointed to take Pam’s class during the morning while Pam is working on Reading Recovery.  Pam will be involved in taking children in need not only at this school but will also be used as a Reading Recovery teacher at Crownthorpe and Pukehamoamoa Schools as well.  Therefore every day she visits two schools and works with pupils here as well.  Every second Wednesday Pam will be required to attend a training day at the reading Recovery centre based at Onekawa School.

13 February   Maureen Grapes, Public Health Nurse, visited the school.  Workers from Bermuda Pools, Hastings, began preparing the school pool for painting.  The pool is to be painted in a “prita-coat” paint, which will hopefully make the bottom of the pool smoother and help prevent algae growth on the sides of the pool.

22 February   Waiwhare Sports Day.

26 February   The Taihape Rd swimming sports were held at Sherenden School.  Our pupils did reasonably well despite the fact that they have had very little swimming because the pool has been emptied for some weeks to enable it to be painted.

27 February   The school was closed during the afternoon to enable the staff to attend an NZEI stop work meeting.

28 February   I was away because of illness.  Keren Wallace relieved in my room for the day.

6 March   Anne Sherwood was away.  Jill Simons relieved.

13 April   Two new pupils have been enrolled recently.  They are Maree Wallace and Dylan Cuttriss. Both pupils were enrolled into the new entrant class.  The school roll is now 42.

14 April    School photos.

15 April   The whole school went on a trip to town to visit an apple packhouse, the Apple and Pear Board and port in conjunction with the whole school study on apple production on the Heretaunga Plains.  The trip was very rewarding and enlightening.  We lunched at McDonalds.  This was also most enjoyable.  An answerphone was received from the Teresa Cormack Trust.

16 April   Today we had a teachers only day.  During the day we looked at an assertive discipline course.  This was run by John Medcalf, psychologist with the Special Education Services.  We found the day very enlightening and very helpful with some good ideas to use in modifying children’s behaviour in our classrooms and in the school.  John is due back after school on Thursday 30 April to discuss this further.

24 April   Gym Festival at McLean Park, Napier.

30 April   John Medcalf returned to continue assertive discipline programme.

TERM 2, 1992

27 May   Royce Lincoln, Health Dept, visited to test the hearing and sight of the new entrant children, as well as for colour blindness in Form 1 boys.

30 May   John Medcalf spent after school with the staff to continue discussing the assertive discipline programme.

1 June   Two plumbers arrived to replace the pot-belly stoves in Room 1 and the library with 2 new Masport free-standing fires.  These look great and we look forward to using them in the near future.

4 June   Shona McDonald, speech therapist, came to discuss one pupil’s individual education plan (IEP).

15 June   John Medcalf re assertive discipline programme.

1 July   Mark Dibbick spent 15 minutes talking to the pupils about religious instruction.

16 July   Kiwisport at Crownthorpe.

13 August    Olympics held at school.  Great day with all children participating fully.

TERM 3, 1992

19 September   School used as polling booth for the Electoral Reform Referendum.

26 September   School 40th reunion held in David Ward’s woolshed, was to have been held at school but the weather was unsettled.  The children performed songs, gave skipping demonstrations and Suzanne Ward and Louise Bryant performed a dance.  About 300 past pupils and parents attended.  There was a dance in the woolshed at night.

14 October   Clown day -the mothers helped the children with their makeup.  They performed several items.

19, 20 October   ERO visit, led by John Shadbolt.

20 October   Fire safety officer visited to discuss emergency procedures with both classes and a school emergency evacuation was held.  New photocopier purchased for $3600, Fax machine also purchased.

1 November   School roll 39.  Mr Dave Mason acting principal.

2 November   John Medcalf and team from Special Education Services visited.

3 November   D & A Day at Crownthorpe

17 November   BOT resigns, reconsidered

19 November   Trip to Kaweka Hut

18, 19 November   Camp cooking at school.

22-27 November   Senior children went to Camp Kaitawa with pupils from Pukehamoamoa School. 17 December   School finishes for the year.
